BOWLS: Bedwyn pair are Boxed in as locals suffer

LOCAL players failed to win any of the four county national titles on offer at the Wiltshire Women's Bowling Association finals day.

All three of the local contestants were beaten in their respective finals staged at a wet Wilton.

The Great Bedwyn pair of Sue Hedges and Jennie Venton became the first ladies from the club to qualify for the national EWBA championships to be staged in Leamington Spa from the end of July for two weeks when winning their semi-final.

But they failed to put the icing on the cake with victory in the final over the experienced Box pairing of Carol Grenfell and Janet Hardie.

They were 6-1 down after five ends but fought back to lead 8-6 at nine.

But the more experienced Box duo then picked up a three and forged away to win by eight shots.

Former national champion Wendy Anderson (Stratton Churchway) was beaten in the two wood final by defending champion Audrey Ralls (Alderbury).

The first 10 ends were nip and tuck with the lead changing hands several times and the scores being tied at 7-7.

It continued to be close and at 13 ends Anderson held the upper hand 10-9.

But she failed to collect another shot conceding 2,2,1,2 and 2 to lose 18-10 at 18ends.

The Westlecot quartet in the fours skipped by Val Mortimer were always chasing the game but a fine rally saw them almost pull the final around.

They were 6-1 down at five ends to Box, 13-5 adrift at 10 ends having conceded a five on the eighth end, and were 17-11 down at 15.

But they fought back to only lose 18-15 in the end.

Hopes of a local winner now rest on the shoulders of Janet Willis who will play the delayed four-wood singles final on Friday at Cooper Avon Tyres.

RESULTS Triples: Eileen Hawker, Carol Davies and Marcia Cottle (Spencer Melksham) lost to Ann Humphries, Janice Bull and Janice Rowe (Amesbury) 11-19.

Pairs: Carol Grenfell and Janet Hardie (Box) beat Sue Hedges and Jennie Venton (Great Bedwyn) 20-12.

Two Wood Singles: Audrey Ralls (holder, Alderbury) beat Wendy Anderson (Stratton Churchway) 18-10.

Fours: Karen Funnell, Sue Cooke, Janet Hardie and Alex Jacobs (Box) beat Mary Dixon, Geraldine Reade, Pat Cornish and Val Mortimer (Westlecot) 18-15.

Singles: The final between Janet Willis (Stratton C) and Janet Hardie (Box) will be played at Cooper Avon Tyres on Friday, July 27, at 10.30am.
